Gingerbread Syrup

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, molasses, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves.
  2. Simmer: Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture has simmered for about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove from Heat: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool.
  4. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any solids.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and let the syrup cool completely before using.

Making the drink

  1. In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz of bourbon, 1/2 oz of gingerbread syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  2. Add ice and stir gently to chill the mixture.
  3. Strain into a glass with a large ice cube.
  4. Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by giving it a twist, then drop the peel into the glass.
